Your Guide to Temporary Graduate visa program changes

So, you're done with your studies in the Land Down Under. You’re ready to launch your Aussie adventure and expand your horizons. But hold your horses! Stay updated, because big changes are coming to the Temporary Graduate visa program (Subclass 485) starting July 1, 2024.

This is based on the new Migration Strategy of the Australian Government, where changes to the visa requirements will be carried out this year. If you’re planning to get a visa for your post-study plans, you can reach out to us at Legacy Migration for more details!

Graduate out, post-vocational in

By July 1, things will be a bit more streamlined. For instance, the Graduate Work visa will be transformed into the Post-Vocational Work stream. Such change focuses on connecting you with jobs that aligns with Australia's in-demand skills.

As per update, you must have an associate degree, diploma, or trade qualification related to an occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List to apply. For example, if you hold a Diploma in Network Engineering or a similar qualification, you can apply for a Temporary Graduate visa by Post-Vocational Work stream.

Just remember, the age limit is now 35 (unless you're a Hong Kong or British National Overseas passport holder, then it's 50).  For more information about this, you may check one of our blogs at Updated Information About Subclass 485 Visa.

If you've set your sights a bit higher and have a bachelor's degree, Masters, or PhD, then the Post-Higher Education Work stream is your new best friend. Same age limit applies (with the Hong Kong and British National Overseas exceptions), but there are some adjustments to how long you can stay. For bachelor's degree (including honors), you have up to 2 years; for masters (coursework and extended), you have up to 2 years; for masters (research) and PhD, you have up to 3 years.

Good news for the Indian folks

If you're coming from India, the good news is your stay periods are staying the same as per the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (AI-ECTA). That means you can potentially stay for up to 4 years with a PhD!

As per new updates, it’ll be 2 years for bachelor's degrees; 3 for bachelor's with first class honors in STEM, including ICT. For masters, it’ll be 3 years, and for doctoral degrees, it’ll be 4 years.

Other updates to the Temporary Graduate Visa program

Aside from the updates above, the rest of the changes will be minor already. For example, the Second Post-Study Work stream will be renamed as Second Post-Higher Education Work stream. There will be no changes to this stream, though.

However, the Replacement stream won't be around after July 1, 2024. But fear not, there might be other visa options for you. Learn more by reaching out to us through our website at Legacy Migration.
