Why Life Feels Incomplete Without Mom

Every year, thousands of families around the world spend Mother’s Day apart—separated by oceans, obligations, and the slow gears of migration. The ache of being away is sharpest on days that are meant for togetherness. Mother’s Day is more than flowers and gifts; it’s a powerful reminder of what we long for the most—shared time, shared stories, and the irreplaceable bond between a mother and her child.

For many living in Australia while their mothers remain overseas—especially in the Philippines—this day shines a spotlight on the emotional toll of distance. But it can also mark the beginning of a journey back to one another.

What Is a Parent Visa?

A Parent Visa is a type of Australian visa that allows eligible parents of Australian citizens or permanent residents to live in or visit Australia, either temporarily or permanently. These visas are designed to help reunite families and allow aging parents to be close to their children and grandchildren. .

Visa Pathways to Reunite with Your Mother

Bringing your mom to Australia can be possible through several visa options tailored to your family’s needs and circumstances:

Subclass 143 – Contributory Parent Visa Permanent visa

  • Faster processing compared to non-contributory options

  • Requires a one-time higher contribution fee

  • Allows full access to Medicare and work rights

Subclass 173 – Temporary Contributory Parent Visa Temporary 2-year visa

  • Can transition to Subclass 143 later

  • Lower initial cost than the 143

Subclass 870 – Sponsored Parent (Temporary) Visa Stay in Australia for up to 3 or 5 years

  • Renewable up to 10 years

  • No work rights

  • Requires financial sponsorship from a child living in Australia

Subclass 600 – Visitor Visa (Tourist Stream) Short-term visits (3, 6, or 12 months)

  • Great for special occasions like Mother’s Day

  • No work rights; must demonstrate intent to return after visit

Subclass 804 – Aged Parent Visa For parents who are age-eligible and already in Australia

  • Longer processing time, but offers a pathway to permanent residency

The Emotional Impact of Distance

Being apart from your mom on Mother's Day is more than a physical separation—it's missing her laugh during dinner, her stories, her warmth. It’s the silence in moments she used to fill with comfort. It’s the space where her presence should be.

Each year that passes is a year of missed memories. But it doesn’t have to stay that way. Australia’s parent visa options offer a clear path toward changing that narrative.
