Chasing Aussie Dreams: Your New Student Visa Regulations Guide

Australia, a land of stunning landscapes, thriving cities, and world-renowned education, continues to attract international students seeking a stellar qualification and an unforgettable experience. However, recent changes to student visa regulations might raise some questions for aspiring Aussie scholars.

Here at Legacy Migration, we want to equip you with the knowledge and support needed to navigate these updates and turn your Australian dream into a reality.

One of the key changes implemented in July 2023 is the work hour restriction for student visa holders. Previously, you could work over 40 hours per fortnight because of the pandemic. Now, the limit sits at 48 hours per fortnight, which is roughly equivalent to three days a week during semesters.

Take the following computation as an example:

  • week 1 – 15 hours work

  • week 2 – 30 hours work

  • week 3 – 30 hours work

  • week 4 – 10 hours work

If we add the working hours from weeks 1 and 2, which are a fortnight, the student is still within working hour limits. However, if the working hours from weeks 2 and 3 were added, the student will have already exceeded the limit for working hours in a fortnight.

It’s important to note that this restriction does not apply to students studying master's degree by research or doctoral degree. Also, student workers that have started working in aged care sectors by 9 May 2023 can still work over 48 hours a fortnight. All these changes are in accordance with condition 8105 in Australian student visas.

While this adjustment might seem like a limitation, it's important to remember that these regulations aim to ensure you prioritize your studies and get the most out of your Australian education. After all, you've chosen a top-notch program, and dedicating quality time to your academics is crucial for success.

Plus, with no work hour limits during breaks, you'll still have ample opportunity to bolster your resume with valuable work experience.

Navigating these changes and the entire visa application process can be confusing. But you don't have to go through it alone. At Legacy Migration, our team of experienced professionals is here to guide you every step of the way. We'll help you understand the latest regulations, compile a strong application, and answer any questions you might have.
