Bridging Borders: Aussie Schools Set Their Sights on the Philippines

Have you heard about how Australian schools are expanding their reach to the Philippines? Recently, twenty-one Australian educational institutions explored exciting transnational education (TNE) opportunities in the Philippines during a business mission led by Austrade CEO, Xavier Simonet. This mission, which took place from May 13 to May 16, 2024, aimed to enhance educational collaborations between Australia and Southeast Asia, particularly in the Philippines.

What is Transnational Education?

Transnational education involves delivering education across borders, which can include partnerships, foreign campuses, or online and hybrid learning models. Australia has been a leader in this area since 1911, offering high-quality education to international students. Before the pandemic, more than 116,000 international students were enrolled in Australian higher education programs delivered offshore, with 60 Australian training providers offering vocational programs to over 26,000 students in various locations.

The Mission to the Philippines

As part of the Australian Government's Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040, education and skills are among the top ten sectors prioritized for collaboration with Southeast Asia. The recent mission to the Philippines was the second under the Australia Southeast Asia Business Exchange program, which aims to boost trade, investment, and cooperation between Australia and the region.

During the mission, delegates engaged in:

  • Roundtable discussions with Philippine policymakers and educational institutions

  • Site visits to local educational and skills institutions

  • Networking events hosted by the Australian Ambassador

  • A business-matching event that created 78 tailored matches for Australian delegates

The enthusiasm and engagement from both sides highlighted the potential for collaboration in the education sector.

Rising Demand for Quality Education

Australia is already the preferred overseas destination for students from the Philippines. The growing middle class in the Philippines is fueling the demand for internationally recognized qualifications. With strong English proficiency and an increasing consumer spend on education, the Philippines presents a valuable opportunity for Australian educational institutions to expand their offerings.

Meeting Skills Needs

The discussions during the mission also focused on addressing the educational needs in the Philippines to fill skills shortages in various industries, such as:

  • Information technology and business process management

  • Construction

  • Agriculture

  • Health

  • Tourism

  • Hospitality

  • Education

Australia possesses the educational expertise needed to help meet these demands. By working with Philippine institutions, Australian providers can develop programs that align with local workforce requirements, ensuring students receive the skills they need for successful careers.

Creating Mutually Beneficial Partnerships

Australian TNE provides a pathway for students in the Philippines to access quality education without having to complete an entire qualification abroad. This approach not only makes international education more affordable but also creates valuable partnerships between Australian and Philippine institutions. By ensuring that both parties benefit, these collaborations can lead to lasting success in the education sector.
